They show in the eject button on the task bar but this often comes with the message 'Cannot remove etc.'. This usually works but the option isn't there for the HDDs. With memory sticks there is almost always an option in the File Explorer context menu to 'Eject'. My experience is that this inconvenience occurs almost entirely with the external HDDs that I use for back up. I scrambled an SD card three weeks ago because I was in a hurry and just pulled it out and it wasn't being read from or written to at the time.

Today I was checking over 2 HDDs I use for backups and external data storage (I have others, and a small fleet of thumb drives). Sometimes that icon is not present when it should be (with a thumb drive or external HDD attached) and I have not been able to find any way to make it appear. When I use any external data storage device (such as an external HDD) I expect to see among the "hidden icons" the familiar icon of a thumb drive, on which you click when finished to avoid removing the device while it is trying to write data.
